Porsche LMP1/98 Presnetation 5/6

Petit Le Mans marked the final outing for the Porsche LMP1/98 and the last race for chassis #691->WSC-001, closing an 8 year career that began at Suzuka in 91.
With a strong 2nd place finish and a genuine shot at victory, the car redeemed its disappointing Le Mans result and bowed out with its head held high. 5 races, 2 Le Mans win, an ISRS Donnington win and this 2nd place, it is one of the most successful Porsche chassis ever.

There’s a certain irony in the fact that it finished ahead of the very same 911 GT1 that it had already beaten at Le Mans in 1997, chassis #005, when it was the factory entered #26 car. That GT1’s race had ended dramatically in a fire at Mulsanne in the early hours of the morning. Guess that if you ever want to beat a 911 GT1 Evo, just take a 962 engine, put it in an XJR-14, and chop the roof off! A rather convoluted solution, but hey, it worked !

Plans were in evaluated for tire testing program with Pirelli in 99, but those never materialized.

Petit Le Mans was also the swan song for another motorsport giant: the Joest-Porsche partnership. After two decades of success and countless victories, including the remarkable achievement of making a single chassis a 2 time sLe Mans winner, twice (a feat accomplished only 4 times in history), their era came to an end.
With Porsche withdrawing from competition for 99 and shelving the Porsche 9R3/LMP2000 project meant there was no future for Joest with the brand.

But where one legendary alliance ends, another begins: 99 marked the debut of Audi Sport Team Joest, the team that would go on to define endurance racing for the next 18 years.

In this post, I showcase all the intricate details of the 3D model. A significant effort went into fully recreating the engine and front chassis. Once again, a massive thanks to @dempseymotorsports for providing invaluable engine references, this project wouldn’t have been possible without his help!
For the keen-eyed, you may have noticed that this 3D model only features the Le Mans engine configuration. Due to a lack of references, the Petit Le Mans setup won’t be fully completed until I tackle the Porsche WSC-95 3D model.
